The Month of the Truffle: November Truffle Fairs and Festivals in Piemonte

Autumn is the season of the truffle in Piemonte. While the International White Truffle Fair of Alba is the best-known event for this rare "diamond of the earth," it is certainly not the only one. All throughout the lower Langhe, particularly in the zones of Asti and Monferrato, the aroma of truffle hangs on the air all during October and November. Local, regional, and national fairs, often paired with markets for local food and wine, overseen by the truffle hunters and their loyal companions, are the autumn's most anticipated events.
If autumn is the best season for purchasing truffles, it goes to follow that November is the perfect month for tasting them. According to experts, this is the period when the underground mushrooms reach their organoleptic apex, offering their very best flavor and aroma. November is also the period when the earth of Piemonte is especially generous, and truffles are found in the most abundance.
Truffle fairs, festivals, and sagras are the best opportunities for finding high quality truffles (unless you're a truffle hunter yourself!). All through lower Piemonte, villages, towns, and larger cities host their own event for the truffle, offering the best of the catch often hand-in-hand with local food and wine specialties.
