Take a roundtrip through the Monferrato without traveling more than a few steps through the historical cellars of Coppo Winery.
On Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 from 10 am-7 pm, Coppo Winery invites all wine lovers to a unique event dedicated to tasting the Monferrato in some of its most authentic enological expressions: Nizza DOCG (100% Barbera) and Moscato d’Asti DOCG from the Canelli subzone.
"Nizza-Canelli CoastTOCoast" will be an incredible trip through wines, labels, terroirs, and histories of producers who have dedicated a large part of their work towards developing two particular wines from these hills, a territory recognized by UNESCO as part of a World Heritage.
Ten guest producers will be at the Coppo wine cellars, sharing this mini travel adventure with selected wines for tasting, together with two wines from Coppo: the Riserva della Famiglia Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOC Nizza and Moncalvina Moscato d’Asti DOCG Canelli. The winemakers all share productive styles, a love for the Monferrato territory, and an approach towards making wine that leaves room for just one goal: high quality that expresses the Monferrato. The wine tasting will be open for everyone, at no fixed price (donations appreciated).
Discover a multitude of interpretations created by just as many producers. This is the wonder of Piemontese wine.

NIZZA
CASCINA GARITINA
Founded in 1900, Cascina Garitina is a family-run farm and winery located in Castel Boglione. Now in its fourth generation, today it is directed by Gianluca Morino, who makes his Nizza from his oldest vines (planted in 1939, 1951, and 1969) with the best sun exposure.
Gianluca will be bringing Barbera d’Asti Superiore Nizza Neuvsent to the wine tasting, which owes its name to the Nineteenth century (“Neuvsent” in Piemontese), the year in which nonna Margheritina, from which Cascina “Garitina” takes its name, began cultivating vineyards.
BREMA
Directed by Ermanno Brema and his young son Umberto, the cellars of Brema Winery are an historical feature of the town where the winery is located, Incisa Scapaccino, dating back to 1887. Their main wine is Barbera, and they have dedicated their best vineyards to this variety in Nizza Monferrato and in Fontanile d’Asti.
Umberto will be bringing Barbera d’Asti DOCG Superiore Nizza, which comes from estate-owned vineyards situated in the vineyards of Nizza Monferrato (Bricco) with excellent sun exposure.
TENUTA OLIM BAUDA
Dino, Diana, and Gianni Bertolino chose to live in the land belonging to their long family heritage, which has dedicated its vineyards to only native grapes for four generations. Tenuta Olim Bauda gets its name from the Villa Bauda located in Incisa Scapaccino, the seat of their winery today.
The Bertolino brothers will be bringing their star of the show to the tasting, Barbera d’Asti DOCG Superiore “Nizza,” which comes from Incisa Scapaccino vineyards growing around the villa.
EREDE DI CHIAPPONE ARMANDO
This winery gives its name to the founder of the family, Armando (class of 1908), who already understood the importance of their unique vineyard characteristics for producing excellent quality wines. Today, the winery is managed by Armando’s grandson, Daniele Chiappone, who works alongside his father Franco and mother Diliana in the vineyards of Cascina San Michele in Nizza Monferrato.
Daniele will bring Barbera d’Asti Superiore Nizza DOCG “RU” to the tasting, which is made from three vineyards of the ages 68, 55, and 15 years planted in the hills of San Michele near Nizza Monferrato, and one in Vento Valley, located on the border of the townships of Nizza and Castel Boglione.
MICHELE CHIARLO
Michele Chiarlo founded his winery of the same name in Calamandrana in 1965, picking up the legacy of three generations of vine growers. Other than vineyards in the Monferrato Astigiano cultivated with barbera and moscato, the winery manages vineyards in the important crus of Barolo, Barbaresco, and Gavi.
Chiarlo will let us taste his Barbera d’Asti Superiore La Court, an icon in the world of Barbera, vinified from the homonymous vineyard “La Court,” located in Castelnuovo Calcea.
CANELLI
ARMANGIA
Ignazio Giovine founded Armangia in 1988 in Canelli, with a farmer’s heritage that goes back to the 17th century. In Piemontese, Armangia means “to turn the tables,” because as Ignazio writes, “We wanted to return Canelli to the fame it once had, matching that of other great wine cities and removing it from its industrial image that it picked up in the past few decades.” Today, the winery cultivates vineyards in Canelli, Moasca, San Marzano Olivet, and Castel Boglione.
Ignazio will let us taste their Moscato d’Asti DOCG Canelli, made from vineyards located within the township of Canelli at about 190 meters above sea level with south-southeast sun exposure.
AVEZZA
The Avezza Winery of Canelli has belonged in the family since 1956, when Aldo Avezza (class of 1893) decided to manage estate-owned vineyard property. Then, the winery passed to his son Aldo and then to his grandson Paolo, who still directs the winery and its seven hectares of barbera, nebbiolo, dolcetto, pinot nero, chardonnay, and moscato today.
Avezza will be bringing Moscato d’Asti DOCG Canelli La Commenda, made from vineyards located in Canelli.
BARISEL
Franco Barisel has been producing wine since 1985 in Canelli, in the heart of Monferrato, supported by the experience and teachings of his father Enrico, who bought the winery in 1965. In addition to Moscato Canelli, the winery produces Barbera d’Asti, Monferrato Bianco, Dolcetto, a Brut metodo classico, and a passito from moscato grapes.
Franco will be bringing Moscato d’Asti DOCG Canelli Barisel to the tasting, made from a single vineyard located in Regione San Giovanni in Canelli.
CERUTTI
Cascina Cerutti is located in Cassinasco, a tiny township south of Canelli. The Cerutti family, vine growers by tradition, have been making wine under the family name since 1936. Today, the winery is directed by Gianmario, fourth generation, and Gianmario’s father Enrico, his mother Luciana, and his wife Anita.
Gianmario will let us taste his Moscato d’Asti DOCG Canelli “Surì Sandrinet,” obtained from vineyards located in Cassinasco.
BOCCHINO
Bocchino is a family-run winery located in Canelli. In the mid-1800s, Felice, ancestor of the family, was already exporting wines overseas to America in small wine barrels. In the 1930s, Aurelio and Liggia Bocchino took over the reins of the family business, which then passed to its current directors: their son Beppe and his wife Maria, supported by their children Annalisa and Daniele.
The Bocchino family will let us taste Moscato D’Asti DOCG – Sorì Dei Fiori, made from a sorì in Canelli. In Piedmontese, sorì means a vineyard exposed to the best amount of sun during the day, thus producing grapes of the best quality.
