Vinum 2017: 41st National Fair of the Wines of Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato

The annual springtime event Vinum is returning to Alba on April 22-25, 29-30, and May 1. This national wine fair is undoubtedly the most important enological event in Piemonte this season. It’s held during several long weekends when many Italians will be off work due to national holidays, enjoying the beautiful spring weather—and wine, as Alba transforms itself into a huge, open-air enoteca with delicious tasting itineraries, events, and wine tastings.

Vinum is a showcase and wine tasting of the great wines of the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato. The piazzas of the city will turn into long wine tasting streets, with tables set up laden with the most important wines produced in the territory: Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Moscato, Roero Arneis, and Roero; the whites of the Langhe; Asti spumante; and the wines of the Monferrato. And no one’s left out: there will also be grappas and other traditional liquors of Piemonte. The stands will be manned by sommeliers of AIS, and wine lovers may come and taste from 10:30 am to 8:00 pm every day of the event. Street Food stands will be set up in the historical center of Alba, serving up high quality dishes rich in history and Langhe tradition.

What’s new in 2017

Vinum in Cantina

For the 2017 edition, a couple of exciting, new events will be taking place: Vinum in Cantina – Food & Wine Experience is for wine tourists and gourmands, giving people the opportunity to visit some of the most important wineries in the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato. The wineries themselves are selected by great chefs, who, at the end of the tours, will prepare a special aperitivo paired with the hosting winery’s labels. There will be a shuttle that departs from and returns to Alba at 4:30 and 8:30 pm.

International wines

Another interesting initiative of 2017 is the partnership with transalpine regions. During the second weekend of the event (April 29-May1), Vinum will host “Associazione Undici del Vino” and the wines from Switzerland and southern Germany in the Cortile della Maddalena. What a great occasion to taste wines from beyond the usual territories in Piemonte! In addition, wine producers prove their competencies outside of the enological world, too: on Saturday, April 29 at 8:45, the “national teams” of each—composed of producers—will play a friendly soccer match: Italy against a Swiss-German team!

Wine and cheese

Because nothing goes better together than wine and cheese, Vinum will also be organizing a series of tasting workshops with ONAF (National Cheese Tasting Organization). Enologist Lorenzo Tablino and a sommelier will guide participants through a tasting of fresh, herbed, and aged cheeses paired with special wines of the territory.

Fun for the whole family

Vinum…Bimbi will also make a reoccurrence this year, which is great news for families. Our future taste-makers, sommeliers, and wine lovers will learn about the value of wine through games: wooden playthings and artisan toys, locally made, will be available for toddlers to play with.
